4 Steps to a Cleaner Office Desk

A clean and organised work desk has a ton of benefits. It makes you more productive, allows you to maintain high hygiene standards, and helps you feel energised and inspired. But our day-to-day activities at work can mess up our desks, making our workspace chaotic. If you feel like your office desk is always messy, or your clean desk doesn’t last for more than two days, this article is for you.

Here is a 4-step guide to cleaning your office desk and maintaining it well.

STEP 1: Empty your office desk

Before we get into the actual process of cleaning, it is vital to empty your desk first. Take off all your devices, papers and stationery and empty your drawers too. Place all of your items in a large pile away from your desk. Once you have everything out of the way, wipe down all surfaces. Clean your desk with a microfiber towel and a mild mixture of soap and water. Make sure you get the stubborn coffee stains, ink marks and any other grime from your table and drawers. Then, go over it with a sanitiser wipe or a general sanitiser spray.

STEP 2: Purge

Now that the cleaning process is over, it is time to evaluate your pile of items. One of the many reasons our desks get so cluttered is because we don’t take enough time to toss the things that don’t serve any purpose anymore. Take the next few minutes to go through the pile methodically. Throw away papers and stationery that you don’t need. Group like items and place them in a container. Check for any damaged items, discard/recycle and replace them. Detangle all your wires and use cable ties to keep them neat and clean behind your desk.

STEP 3: Organise

The next step is to create an organisational system while keeping your office desk essentials back. Keep all of your pens in a pen holder, your papers in a file and chargers in the drawers. Keep your most-used bulky items like books and printers close by, by placing a bookshelf beside your office desk. You can also fit your desk drawer with a tray or an organiser to hold your sticky notes, tape, staplers and paper clips. STEP 4: Ritualise Cleaning

Decluttering your desk is not a once-a-year proposition. Once you clean it, you need to put in the effort to maintain it.
