5 Hacks to Declutter Your Home Office in Under 10 Minutes

With the government encouraging anyone who can work from home to do so, most Irish employees have found themselves working from their home offices. But here’s the thing about working from home – life can creep into our home offices without us even realising. Letters, takeaway boxes, cereal bowls, sweaters or if you have children, a toy or two could end up around your workstation. Sounds like your workspace? Don’t worry. We have got you five quick and easy hacks that you can follow every morning or at the end of every day to declutter your space.

Each of these hacks takes less than two minutes to do, so you can be sure to have your workspace spick and span in under 10 minutes!

1. The 10-minute tidy

First things first, get your phone out and set a timer for 10 minutes. This is an incredible hack if you don’t like to commit to cleaning or if you want to tidy up and don’t have much time to spare. Once you set the timer on, see how much you can tidy. If you find any misplaced items around your workspace, use this time to quickly put it where it needs to go. You can also make thighs fun by listening to an audiobook or your favourite podcast while you declutter.

Once your 10 minutes are up, stop and look at how much you got done! Of course, you can keep going if you want to. If not, you can do another 10-minute declutter routine after work or the next day.

2. Empty your bin 

Take a couple of minutes to gather things that need to be discarded. These items can be Post-it notes that are not required anymore, takeaway boxes, pens that don’t work, etc. Recycle what you can and trash the rest.

Sometimes, we may not realise how much trash we accumulate during the workday. Therefore, taking time to incorporate this step in your tidying routine can help make your space more efficient and less cluttered.

3. Group similar items

During the course of the day, you might find it hard to find things when you need them. This is why it is essential to group like items when you’re doing your daily cleaning routine. Gather similar items and put them in a container. It can be as simple as putting all your files in a file holder, all of your stationery in a pencil stand, and all your books or journals neatly stacked on a bookshelf.

This crucial step only takes less than two minutes and changes the look of your office from messy to organised in the blink of an eye. Additionally, you will always know where to find items, so you’re not wasting valuable work time.

4. Manage your cables

Although most of us have steered towards wireless gadgets, there will always be cables of monitors and chargers of laptops that will need to be tamed. Having too many cables around your workspace is visually unappealing to look at and is a fire and tripping hazard. 

Spend a minute to pull all your cables together neatly and use a cable management system or cable ties to neaten your space. If there are ceratin cables that you don’t need, tuck them away in a drawer. If the obtrusive mess of cables bothers you, you can also switch to a wireless keyboard and mouse set, if possible.

5. Wipe everything down

Covid-19 has brought disinfecting practices into the spotlight, and therefore disinfection of spaces and gadgets is no longer something we can forget to do. With everything out of the way and your desk decluttered, cleaning is going to be much smoother. First, dampen a microfiber towel with an alcohol-based disinfectant or use a disinfecting wipe to wipe down the desk. You can also take this time to disinfect your laptop, keyboard and mouse.
