After a long and challenging 2021, it’s finally time to enter into 2022! With those end-of-year reports, deadlines, and an overflowing inbox that needs to be tackled, December is indeed a very busy month for most of us.
Nobody likes to drag around unfinished work into the new year. We all want to do our best to tie up all those loose ends and enter into 2022 with a fresh start. So here are our top 6 feel-good tips to help you wrap up your year in style and set yourself up for success in 2022-
1. Make that list
This idea may seem very old-school, but at Codex, we are strong supporters of this technique. Make a list of all the things you need to complete by the end of the year. Include the projects you’re working on, the deadlines and the ones that may carry over into the new year. Since the festive reason includes a lot of gift-giving, do not hesitate to include your personal items in it. This will give you a clear picture of how much stuff you have going on (personally and at work) and allow you to allocate ample time to check things off this list!
The buzz you get from crossing things off your list will help you feel more in control and help you wrap up your year in an orderly manner.
2. Take control of your inbox
We have written a whole article with 13 tips on how you can clean out and organise your emails, but we think it is worth mentioning again. The end of the year is a great time to go through all of your emails, delete and unsubscribe from the ones that are no longer relevant to you. The next step is to create folders for important ones. Remember the ‘Read, file, delete’ rule. When you get an email, read it, file it if it’s essential and delete it if it’s not.
December is a busy month for most of us, so even if you don’t have the time to clean up your inbox now, you can dedicate a date in early January to do this.
3. Say Thank You
We all like to be appreciated from time to time. Several studies state that praise from a superior beats financial and non-financial incentives for performance motivators. Just like you, your colleagues have also worked hard over the year. Let your colleagues, contractors and other friends know how much you appreciate their efforts at work. Write them a kind email or even a handwritten card to remind them of their impact on the organisation.
Take time this December to review your entire year. This activity should not take you more than 15 minutes to complete. The aim of this activity is to ask yourself retrospective questions and use it as a means of closure on the year. Think of the accomplishments you are proud of, things that surprised you this year and the failures you encountered. Appreciate or reward yourself for your achievements and make a note of what you learnt from the failures.
Pausing and reflecting can do wonderful things for your psyche and make you feel great as you wrap up your year.
5. Set your goals for 2022
Now that 2021 is coming to an end and you have answered the questions stated above, it is time to prepare yourself for the upcoming year. Based on your experiences in 2021, choose 3-5 goals that you can do justice to. Think of goals that will help you grow, enhance your career and make you happy.
The goals you have chosen should be out of your comfort zone – but attainable. Give yourself enough time to think this through, so when 2022 comes around, you’re prepared to work hard and achieve them!
