How to Keep Employees Engaged in a Hybrid Workplace

With the world of work surviving two years of the pandemic, things have started to look a little different. Employee experiences, expectations and priorities have changed, and hybrid working is here to stay. According to a study by Gallup, nearly 85% of employees worldwide are either “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” at work, citing reasons like poor management and lack of recognition and autonomy. So if your company has been putting employee engagement activities on hold, it is time to think about hybrid working strategies that put employee engagement first.

1. Equip leaders and managers to communicate frequently and transparently

Transparent and frequent communication is a challenge in the best of times. Since most employees work remotely in some capacity during the week, they might feel disengaged and bored. They may also be unaware of what is happening at work if they don’t hear from their managers often. Therefore, it is essential for every organisation, every leader and manager to maintain robust communication with their employees.

Consider increasing the frequency and depth of one-to-one conversations to ensure that there is dialogue and not just a relay of information. Hold discussions, and allow employees to share suggestions and insights. To free up more time across the organisation, higher-level leaders can reduce the number of lengthy meetings to allow more time for smaller team meetings and huddles.

2. Invest in the right tech for collaboration

Like communication, collaboration among employees and teams is also necessary to boost employee engagement. Due to the pandemic, almost every industry has undergone significant digital transformation. Companies now rely on technology and collaboration tools to simplify processes and take projects past the finish line. Technology solutions can also play an important role in keeping employees engaged and rewarded. Instead of scheduling a meeting, consider posting a detailed message or video on your company intranet. Want to work on a document together? Use Google Docs. Want to brainstorm? Use a platform like Mural. There are several ways to collaborate. You don’t always have to jump on the phone or video call to make that happen.

3. Rewards and recognise your employees

Employees are the lifeblood of any organisation. They are its biggest asset and a major source of revenue. Therefore, your business needs to recognise your employees’ efforts to keep them motivated and engaged. Recognition programs are a great way to show appreciation to employees and reward them for their hard work. It helps in building a positive culture, which is essential for organisations to develop, grow, and thrive. Rewards and recognition programs, employee of the month programs and awards are a few strategies that help employees feel valued and make them feel that they are part of something bigger.

4. Prioritise relaxation at work

The modern workplace has become a place of extreme stress, with long hours and little to no personal time. Therefore it is essential to replicate watercooler talk and other social interactions. If your team is working long hours, try setting up informal meetings with absolutely no agenda. You can play a virtual game, ask your team about their weekend, and let the conversation flow. You can also offer a company-wide "mental health" day off every quarter.
