A Summer at Codex: My Journey of Growth and Learning

My journey at Codex began at the start of the summer, thanks to the DCU Access to the Workplace programme, which is provided to DCU Access students in their second year of studies.

As a psychology student, I was thrilled to be paired with Codex’s Head of People & Culture, Aisling Murray and the HR department for the summer. From the moment I started working, I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The smiles and open arms I encountered made me feel at home, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experience. The working environment at Codex truly blew me away.

Balancing Roles: HR and Green Earthlings

Throughout the summer, my workload was evenly distributed between the HR department and my role as a Green Earthling.

Taking on several responsibilities across different areas pushed me outside my comfort zone, helping me grow more confident in my abilities and work.

Contributing to HR Initiatives

During my time at Codex, I played a key role in enhancing recruitment processes in the HR department by developing the recruitment tab on Personio, Codex’s HR software.

I also contributed to standardising job specifications, ensuring consistency and clarity across all positions. Additionally, I explored the training hours tab on Personio, logging recent training sessions to keep records up to date.

My work also included helping to develop the mid-year Pulse survey to gather employee feedback.

Joining the Green Earthlings Team

Thanks to Rachel Jackson, I joined the Green Earthlings team and learned all about product and company sustainability.

One of my proudest achievements was identifying greener alternatives to the company's top-selling products, which led to an even greater project. My work here was fulfilling and aligned with my values, making it one of the most memorable parts of my summer at Codex.

I was also involved in promoting and executing Codex’s Second Annual Environment Week, an event designed to raise awareness and encourage eco-friendly practices within the company.

Promoting Sustainability with Green Earthlings

As part of the Green Earthlings initiative, I supported Codex’s efforts to become more environmentally friendly. This included helping to remove all single-use plastic products from the Codex website and identifying green alternatives to the top 200 sold products. I also compiled a product list for a unique green catalogue, showcasing Codex’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Involvement in Company Events

I actively organised company events throughout the summer, including the Barretstown Amazing Race and the Barretstown Helping Hands Day. These events provided team-building opportunities while supporting Codex’s 23/24 Charity Partner, Barretstown.

Planning for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

I also contributed to planning and brainstorming ideas for Codex’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Company Day, focusing on creating an inclusive and engaging event.

One of my highlights was working on the Diversity and Tenure Report for 2024, where I created an extensive report that showcased vital statistics and trends within the workforce. This project allowed me to present a large set of data creatively, and I even had the chance to show my findings to the wider management team.

A Summer of Learning and Memorable Experiences

This summer has been an incredible learning opportunity for me in every positive way. I got involved in areas of work that I never imagined would interest me, and I loved every second of it. The knowledge I’ve gained during my short tenure here is invaluable, and the memories I’ve made will be hard to forget. I’m looking forward to seeing the Green Catalogue come to life soon, and I hope to be back at Codex one day.

Gratitude and Reflection

I want to extend a special thank you to Aisling and Rachel, with whom I spent most of my time at Codex. Working with both of you has been a seamless and enjoyable experience throughout the summer.

As I wrap up my time at Codex, I can't help but feel a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This summer has been more than just a work experience; it has been a personal and professional growth journey. I've learned so much, stepped out of my comfort zone, and contributed to meaningful projects that align with my passions.

The skills and memories I've gained will stay with me long after I leave. I’m thankful for the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to work with and the opportunities that have come my way. This chapter at Codex has undoubtedly shaped my future, and I look forward to carrying these experiences with me wherever I go.

Thank you, Codex, for an unforgettable summer!
