At Codex, we are excited to announce the launch of our Second Annual Environment Week! Building on last year's success, this week is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity and engaging our colleagues and their families in fun, educational, and competitive activities.

Why Environment Week Matters to Us

Environment Week is crucial for Codex as it highlights the importance of biodiversity and our role in preserving it. Last year, our focus was on recycling, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

  • 91% of our colleagues agreed that Our First Annual Environment Week improved their knowledge of sustainability issues at work.
  • 89% reported being more aware of the correct bin for household waste.

This year, our theme shifts to biodiversity, as we aim to educate colleagues on how they can make a difference both at home and in the office. With our hybrid work model, it's important that we continue to promote sustainable practices in all areas of our lives.

Our biodiversity theme links closely with June 5th's World Environment Day, which this year is celebrating Land Restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.

Why Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the foundation of ecosystem health, providing essential services such as clean air and water, crop pollination, and resilience against climate change. However, it is under severe threat from human activities, making it imperative to raise awareness and promote conservation efforts.

By focusing on biodiversity for this year's Environment Week, we aim to educate our colleagues on its importance, highlight the interconnectedness of all living organisms, and encourage actions that protect and restore natural habitats. This theme aligns with our commitment to fostering a sustainable future and emphasises the urgent need to preserve the rich variety of life that supports our planet.

Engaging Biodiversity Activities for All

Environment Week is not just about learning—it's about engaging with colleagues and their families in meaningful and fun ways. Here's a glimpse of what we have planned:

  • Online Quiz: Back by popular demand, our quiz will test your biodiversity knowledge, both in Ireland and globally.
  • Nature Trail Scavenger Hunt: Kiddies are encouraged to explore and discover the wonders of biodiversity in their surroundings.
  • Sunflower Competition: Sunflower seedings are available to take home and will be judged in the summer, with prizes for the tallest, widest, and sunniest!
  • Company Town Halls: This year, we are delighted to have guest speakers from Cloudforests and WEEE Ireland to help launch and wrap up Environment Week.

Codex Annual Environmental Week Activities

Reflections on our First Annual Environment Week in 2023

Last year’s Environment Week was a resounding success, with 100% of the 35 respondents rating the week 4 or 5 out of 5. Here's a breakdown of the participation in various events:

  • Kiddies Poster Competition: 8 participants
  • Awards: 18 participants
  • WEEE Battery Drive: 17 participants
  • CSI Scavenger Hunt: 16 participants
  • Kahoot Quiz: 14 participants
  • Food Waste Competition: 10 participants

The quiz and engaging our Codex Kids were among the most popular events, so we are excited to bring them back this year.

Environment Week: The Lasting Impact

The impact of our First Annual Environment Week has been substantial:

1. International Award Nomination: Last year, Codex was shortlisted for an international award for Employee Engagement!

2. Battery Recycling Station: A permanent station was set up for staff to recycle batteries, complemented by "Recharge our Battery Massages" during our December company day.

3. Streamlined Waste Management: We removed desk bins and improved our waste sorting facilities, leading to an impressive 98% recycling rate - up from 96% the previous year.

4. Informative Posters: The kid's posters created last year still hang in our office, spreading cheer and informing us about proper waste disposal.

5. Herb and Strawberry Garden: We established a garden that continues to thrive.
