From a 9 to 5 in the office to remote working and now hybrid working, the pandemic has redefined how we use the office. This evolution of the workplace has caused companies all over the world to rethink and reimagine their office designs.

Hybrid working

While the term “Future of Work” may still have many uncertainties attached to it, one thing is clear – hybrid working arrangements are here to stay, at least in the near term. Hybrid working is a part-remote, part-office model that is supposed to offer the best deal for both employers and employees, and this model is all set to dominate the world of work in 2023.

A hybrid working design requires a new perspective on how employees use the office. From how they communicate and collaborate and the nature and size of teams, workplaces must optimise their spaces to maximise social interaction, safety and collaboration. 

Sustainability

The idea that the planet’s health is just as important as human health is gathering steam, and incorporating sustainable practices will be critical for businesses in the coming year. Sustainability is no longer a bolt-on to an organisation or a ‘nice-to-do’ factor. It is becoming a business-critical decision for most workplaces today.

From sourcing environmentally friendly products to saving energy and fuel and using eco-friendly office products, there has been a significant shift in how businesses operate, and this will continue to build momentum as we move into 2023.

Technology

The following year will see an office that is much beyond laptops and cloud-based systems, especially with the rise of remote and hybrid working. Meeting spaces must accommodate high-quality hybrid meetings with colleagues working from different locations.

Innovative technology will also be seen in buildings. For instance, touchless entry and smart access control systems will be in place to allow access to meeting rooms, lifts and washrooms. 

Breakout areas and collaboration spaces

As offices continue to evolve, employers must ensure that their spaces are employee-centric and encourage collaboration. This need has given rise to the concept of collaboration spaces and breakout zones – zones or areas that are comfortable, cosy, and can be used for different purposes.

The year 2023 will see an increase in agile workspaces such as open-plan layouts, acoustic pods, phone booths and meeting booths. Not only do these workspaces encourage better collaboration, but they also make the office more welcoming for employees.  

Biophilic design

The concept of biophilic design states that humans have an innate need to connect with nature, and without it, our health and productivity can suffer. Humans spend over 93% of their time indoors, so workspaces must include elements of greenery and nature to improve mood and well-being in the office.

However, 2023 will see a sharper focus on multi-sensory elements like biophilic walls, natural light, and sounds and scents from the natural world.
