Codex Celebrates Its Third Annual Environment Week

We were proud to host our Third Annual Environment Week, building on the successes of the past two years, which focused on recycling and biodiversity. This year, our theme shifted to the Zero Waste philosophy, as we aimed to educate colleagues on how they could make a difference both at home and in the office. With our hybrid work model, it was important for us to continue promoting sustainable practices in all areas of our lives.

Our Zero Waste theme closely aligned with Zero Waste Week, which ran from 1st to 5th September.

Why We Mark Environment Week Every Year

We recognise that if every Codex employee recycled just one more item per day, we could prevent nearly 33,000 items from being incinerated annually — that’s almost a tonne of waste! Environment Week is crucial for Codex as it provides an opportunity to educate and engage colleagues on the Zero Waste philosophy and how it can be implemented at work and at home.

Engaging Activities This Environment Week

Environment Week was not just about learning but also about engaging with colleagues in meaningful and fun ways. Highlights from the week included:

  • A TOWNHALL WITH PLANET MARK
The week started with a Townhall featuring our partners at Planet Mark, where we celebrated our first Full Scope measurement — a significant milestone in our sustainability journey and one of our 2025 commitments in our CSR report.

  • A SESSION WITH THORNTONS RECYCLING
Recognising that sustainability starts at home, we welcomed our Waste Management contractors, Thorntons Recycling, who spoke about why recycling is important, why we should rinse cartons, and how to save money on home bills.

  • FLEET SUSTAINABILITY UPDATES
Our fleet contributes 150 tonnes of CO₂e annually, so in 2024, we introduced three electric vans to help reduce our emissions. While electric vehicles aren’t yet viable for our nationwide delivery routes, we have begun trialling Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) across our remaining diesel fleet. This innovative fuel can reduce emissions by up to 90%, helping us significantly lower our carbon footprint while maintaining operational reach.

  • A FIRESIDE CHAT WITH LEXY STAFFURTH
In a fireside chat, Codex’s Head of Supply Chain Lexy Staffurth explored the hidden lifecycle of donated clothing by answering the question, “What happens after you put your clothes in the charity bag?” The session sparked conversations on textile waste and ethical fashion, concluding with practical takeaways on slowing down fast fashion.

Environment Week: The Lasting Impact

Each of our previous Environment Weeks left a lasting legacy — from the creation of our garden to introducing a battery recycling station and streamlined waste management. This year, we added to that legacy with the launch of the Codex Cares Repair Station: a permanent hub equipped with sewing kits, spare buttons, and easy-to-follow repair guides. This simple yet impactful initiative empowers us all to extend the life of our clothing and embrace the principles of circular fashion.

Thank You for Joining Us

We were delighted to see so many colleagues participate in this year’s Environment Week. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute to preserving our planet. Together, we made a difference and will continue to build on this momentum to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Our commitment to environmental sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Codex. From implementing energy-efficient measures and practising waste reduction and recycling, to nurturing a sustainable supply chain and engaging our employees, we continue to lead by example and create a positive impact on the environment.

Marking our Third Annual Environment Week provided us with a dedicated platform to showcase these initiatives, educate our colleagues, collaborate with our partners, and inspire meaningful action. Together, we can foster a culture of sustainability and work towards a greener, more sustainable world for generations to come.
