Simple Ways to Support Inclusion at Work

Every July, Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the diversity, strength, and achievements of people with disabilities. But beyond flying the flag (literally or metaphorically), the month serves as a powerful reminder that inclusion at work should be more than a checkbox; it should be woven into the DNA of every organisation.

Whether you're a business leader, HR manager, or a colleague wanting to be more supportive, fostering an inclusive workplace culture is a meaningful step toward fairness and stronger performance. Inclusive companies are more innovative, attract top talent, and score higher on employee engagement.

In this blog, we’ll walk through simple but meaningful ways to support inclusion at work, not just during Disability Pride Month but year-round. We’ll also look at current research, especially from Irish workplaces, and share how Codex champions neurodiversity and disability inclusion.

The Real Impact of Disability Inclusion at Work

Let’s start with the “why.”

According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), one in five people in Ireland has a disability. Yet, labour force participation among disabled people remains disproportionately low, with just 40% of people with a disability in employment, compared to over 70% of the general population (CSO, 2022).

These stats are more than just numbers; they point to real barriers that prevent people from thriving in work environments that are often not designed with accessibility, flexibility, or neurodivergence in mind.

Disability Pride Month is about visibility, advocacy, and pride in identity. It’s also a time for organisations to reflect: Are we doing enough to support all employees, especially those with disabilities, both visible and invisible?

Disability Inclusion in the Workplace

Simple (and Impactful) Ways to Support Inclusion at Work

You don’t need a whole DEI department to start making a difference. Here are practical ways to support inclusion in your workplace:

1. START WITH EDUCATION

Raising awareness is step one.

  • Host disability inclusion training sessions, covering topics like unconscious bias, accessible communication, and inclusive hiring practices.
  • Bring in speakers with lived experience of disability.
  • Encourage team members to engage with Disability Pride Month content.

Tip: Don’t make it a once-off during July. Inclusion should be continuous.

2. REVIEW YOUR HIRING PROCESS FOR ACCESSIBILITY

Are your job ads inclusive? Are your interview processes adaptable?

  • Use plain, jargon-free language in job descriptions.
  • Offer alternative formats (audio, large print, screen reader-compatible).
  • Be flexible with interview formats - video, phone, or in-person, with adjustments.
  • Include a line like: “We’re committed to making our recruitment process accessible. Let us know if you need adjustments.”

3. MAKE YOUR PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL SPACES MORE ACCESSIBLE

Accessibility goes beyond wheelchair ramps.

  • Ensure office spaces are physically accessible (e.g., lifts, wide hallways, quiet areas).
  • Use accessible digital platforms - think alt text, captioned videos, and screen reader compatibility.
  • Add adjustable desks and ergonomic chairs as standard, not special requests.

Tip: Workplaces that are accessible to people with disabilities are often more comfortable for everyone.

4. CELEBRATE AND SHARE REAL STORIES

Amplify all voices in your organisation.

  • Share internal stories from employees with disabilities (with their permission).
  • Highlight achievements during Disability Pride Month and beyond.
  • Partner with disability advocacy groups for campaigns and storytelling.

5. CREATE A CULTURE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY

Psychological safety is critical for inclusion.

  • Normalise conversations about mental health, chronic illness, and neurodivergence.
  • Train managers on how to support disabled team members without making assumptions.
  • Build in regular one-on-ones where employees can safely share if they need support.

6. IMPLEMENT CLEAR, FLEXIBLE WORKPLACE POLICIES

Inclusion isn't one-size-fits-all.

  • Offer hybrid or remote work options, flexible start times, or task-based work arrangements.
  • Be open to assistive tech or job crafting for individuals with different needs.
  • Build disability inclusion into your employee handbooks and HR policies.

Making Inclusion a Core Part of How We Work

In 2023, Employers for Change, Ireland’s inclusive employment platform, reported that 70% of employers said they wanted to employ more people with disabilities, but weren’t sure how to approach accessibility or disclosure.

This gap isn’t due to bad intent; it’s often due to a lack of knowledge, tools, or confidence. That’s where practical resources and training make a real impact. When employers invest in understanding disability inclusion and neurodiversity, everyone wins.

At Codex, we’ve seen this firsthand.

What Codex Is Doing to Support Neurodiversity and Inclusion

Earlier this year, we partnered with AsIAm, Ireland’s National Autism Charity, to deliver a company-wide Neurodiversity in the Workplace training session, focused on supporting employees with Autism and ADHD.

This was more than a training session; it was part of a broader effort to ensure our workplace is welcoming, adaptable, and inclusive for all individuals, regardless of how they think or process the world.

We also released our Neuroinclusion in the Workplace Report, which explores how businesses in Ireland can better support neurodivergent employees - from inclusive hiring and onboarding to creating safe, supportive environments where everyone can thrive. The report includes actionable tips, expert insights, and reflections from our own journey.

Final Thoughts: Let Disability Pride Month Be the Start, Not the Finish

Disability Pride Month is a powerful catalyst for reflection, but real inclusion happens in the everyday moments - when we listen, learn, adapt, and stand up for equity at every level of the organisation.

Whether you’re just getting started or already on the road to becoming a more inclusive workplace, remember this: small, consistent actions can make a big difference.
